Our Mission

The mission of the Carlin Volunteer Fire Department shall be: to protect and enhance the quality of life of the citizens of the City of Carlin and its surrounding areas, communities and environment; to safeguard the wellbeing, safety, and prosperity of our community by providing fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical service, rescue, and response to hazardous material spills and leaks.

We aim to provide our citizens with a well-equipped, highly trained and compassionate emergency response system capable of alleviating the effects of disasters, tragedies and other threats to life and property. Our services shall be delivered by a dedicated family of members committed to exceeding the needs and expectations of those we serve ... anytime, anywhere, any need.

Our History

The Carlin Volunteer Fire Department is made up of 21 members who risk their lives to serve others. This year marks our 156th anniversary. In 1868, the Central Pacific Steam Fire Company, the first in Elko County, became the Carlin VFD.

Elko County is the fourth largest county by area in the contiguous US. While Carlin is a rural town (pop. 2,368), our first-due response area covers over 240 square miles, twenty times the town's size. We provide 24/7 fire suppression and EMS across Elko & Eureka Counties, US Forest Service land, BLM land, Lander County, and support one of the world's largest gold mines and its supporting industries.

Infrastructure & Response Area

The CVFD protects critical infrastructure within its 240 sq. mile response area, including Interstate 80 and the vital Carlin Tunnels (serving I-80 and Union Pacific Railroad).

We serve Nevada Gold Mines (large open pit and underground operations with 1500+ personnel), providing protection and emergency response.

Other critical infrastructures include communication towers, the Ruby Natural Gas Pipeline, Carlin Conservation Camp, Thomas Petroleum storage, the Nevada National Guard facility (including the Battle Born Youth Challenge Academy), the Southwest Energy emulsion plant, Union Pacific Railroad (transporting hazardous materials), and various industrial facilities handling materials like cyanide, lime, LPG, diesel, sulfuric acid, and hydrogen peroxide.

Community Training

The Carlin Volunteer Fire Department is committed to community preparedness through active public training initiatives.

We offer:

• CPR and First Aid Certification Courses to teach lifesaving skills for adults, teens, and youth groups
• Fire Safety Programs to help families recognize and reduce risks in the home
• Disaster Preparedness Workshops, including evacuation plans and emergency supply kits
• School and Youth Outreach, including interactive events and demonstrations

Our training sessions are held throughout the year and are open to individuals, families, and local organizations. Whether you're a new parent, scout leader, teacher, or just someone who wants to be ready — we invite you to learn with us.
